Burnsville Police Officer Matthew Ruge was shot and killed after responding to a domestic incident.  A male had taken several family members hostage, including seven children, and barricaded himself inside the home.  Officers had been negotiating inside the house with the man, who claimed to be unarmed. After three and a half hours of negotiation, the subject suddenly fired on the officers, striking one officer.  While Officer Ruge was exiting the home, he was struck a second time.  The man continued to shoot at officers from an upstairs window after they had exited the home.  Officer Ruge was transported to the hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds.  Another officer and a firefighter/paramedic were also killed in this incident.  The suspect subsequently died by suicide and was found deceased in the home later. The investigation revealed that the subject fired more than 100 rounds at the officers. The hostages were able to escape safely.  Officer Ruge was survived by his parents and sister.
