A Toronto-area police officer is being hailed for his thorough work on the job, after a licence plate check led to the recovery of six children reported abducted from Alberta.

Durham police say the officer became suspicious when he noticed six children in a green SUV with Alberta plates, at a parking lot in Bowmanville, Ont. The officer ran the plates through the police database and discovered they belonged to a vehicle sought in an abduction investigation in Calgary.

The men and women who serve with California's Sonoma County Sheriff's Office put their lives on the line each day to protect the community — but nothing could have prepared them for this.

St. Paul - Law enforcement officers from all over Minnesota will stand in silent vigil at the Peace Officers Memorial on the State Capitol grounds to remember the 276 fallen Minnesota law enforcement officers who have lost their lives while protecting their communities. The vigil will begin on Saturday May 14th at 7:00 p.m. and continue for 24 hours. Officers will stand for 20 minutes shifts. The Law Enforcement Memorial Association (LEMA) of Minnesota is coordinating the annual event.

National Police Week 2016

In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.
